Bego M. Santiago is a visual artist based in Berlin. Bego considers his art as interdisciplinary. He is said to specialize in the use of light as a sculpture tool. He uses his art to toy with the concept of reality. His use of light allows him to create optical illusions and give life to inanimate objects.

Bego’s work is a little out of the ordinary. He has a unique style and ability to recognize interesting concepts. Below is an example of Bego’s quirky perception of real vs. fake. The installation uses projectors and pressure pads to create a reality where you are a Godzilla-like species.

I can utilize the kind of mindset that Bego operates under. Taking concepts that a relatively known and putting a sensationalist twist on it is something I will try to implement in my work.

Considered one of China’s most important contemporary artists, Yang Fudong branches the gaps between social issues and cultural norms with the use of film, photography, and video installations.

Yang creates the semblance of nostalgia through abstract, fragmented B&W footage.

He is most known for his video installations. For example, his piece The Fifth Night takes place in Shanghai and is presented through seven different TV screens. The use of multiple screens allows him to convey many different actors “raw” emotions at the same time in different film locations. This use of multiple screens also allows the viewer to feel as though they are part of the film.

Yang’s style is quite unique. His work speaks to me as I often value B&W over color for film and photography. His use of music in the films are tense and emotional. This is just another aspect of his work that I appreciate.

I believe I can use his concept of B&W footage, jarring cut scenes, and emotional music in my upcoming project.

I have followed Pablo Rochat on Instagram for the better part of a year. Pablo has a witty approach to somewhat boring topics. He has the innate ability to make the uninteresting very interesting. Pablo has a bright and quirky style that makes rewatching his .gifs a frequent endeavor of mine.

Pablo Rochat frequently collabs with companies like the New York Times, Tinder, Nike, etc. I highly recommend checking out his work if you have the chance.

An illustrator and artist who works out of Minneapolis. Sam illustrates books, creates masterful moving images, and uses new styles to make a distinct piece of work. His work is very colorful but also quiet and soothing. The effects of his works are calming for the soul. It may not be his intention, but Sam has captured, to me, the essence of new age urban lifestyle in a fascinating way.

Sam’s use of complimenting colors and slight differentiation of hues creates this calming imagery. His ability to capture the essence of the story without providing excessive detail is minimalist and refreshing. I would very much like to use his perception of color and shape in my future works.

3D designer and artist based out of the UK.

The piece featured below is a 3D rendered model. Pretty realistic though isn’t it? This is an accomplishment for not only digital art, but also for engineering design. Chris’ work is downright impressive.

The color, lighting, sharpness and scale of the piece are quite modern. I find the sparing use of attractive colors to be very effective and is certainly something I can borrow from in future work.

Jarid Scott is an American digital artist and photographer based in Minnesota.

Is that image not captivating? Jarid Scott’s glitch art shows us that a simple photo can be more.

The more I research different art forms, mediums, etc. the more I learn about myself. I have begun to discover that simple art that has been manipulated resonates with me. I do not know how this reflects on my being; however, it is clear that this art style is fascinating.

I love movies like Blade Runner 2049. The dark yet comforting colors. The visually stunning motion and often uncomfortable silences. This image reminds me of that. There is something soothing about these cool colors and the emotion of the character. I want to start utilizing a style like this in my work.

Weekly archive. Week one. Es Devlin. Stage designer, visionary, artist.

Es Devlin tests the limits of human perception. Her grandiose vision in regards to stage design has been nothing short of phenomenal. Es Devlin over her career has set a new precedent for stage design. Her use of light, raw human emotion, and the abstract has influenced her industry, the music industry, and the art world.

Es’s use of light, mirrors, and other mediums is extremely complex yet so refined it seems nearly simple. It resonates with me at an extremely personal level. I have always had complex ideas. Too complex that I have a difficult time expressing my reality through any medium. I have never considered the approach Es has. Why try to understand other’s perceptions and implement them in your work? I should be creating things that express my perceptions in a way that makes sense to me. The interpretation is up to the viewer. Es inspires me to create attractive, simple things that test boundaries and generate thought through pure uncertainty.
